About Learning and Development
In the field of human resource management, training and development is the field concerned with organizational activity aimed at bettering the performance of individuals and groups in organizational settings. It has been known by several names, including employee development, human resource development, and learning and development.
Learning and Development encompasses three main activities: training, education, and development. To practitioners, they encompass three separate, although interrelated, activities:
Training: This activity is both focused upon, and evaluated against, the job that an
individual currently holds.
Education: This activity focuses upon the jobs that an individual may potentially hold in the future, and is evaluated against those jobs.
Development: This activity focuses upon the activities that the organization employing the individual, or that the individual is part of, may partake in the future, and is almost impossible to evaluate. At CPSS we develop, deliver and maintain our learning and development programmes according to our tried and tested methodology; which can be summarised as follows:
Formulate the Training Strategy
Analyse the precise training needs of the audience, working with the client to define the criteria for success and how the training will be evaluated. Frame the training content to fit the specific needs of the client organisation
Evaluate the learning method. This may be an instructor-led series of events, online
learning or a combination of methods, Identify facilities and equipment resources, particularly for large scale, instructor-led programmes Deliver a training strategy report.
Design the Training Programme
Determine the detailed training programme, i.e. what the package will be, how long it will last, the target audience, delivery mechanism, pre-requisites and follow-on requirements, and topic titles Create a prototype of what the final product will look and feel like; this can provide a 30minute taster of what can be expected from the overall learning experience . Establish document standards to ensure that our products and services integrate and complement the client’s training materials and operations
Develop the Training Course
The purpose of this stage is to develop the actual content, training products and services based on the feedback from the earlier stages. We will continue to work with the client during this stage to ensure any additional relevant detail from their side is incorporated into the training course, which typically includes:
• Participant Packs
• Instructor Guides
• Quick Reference Guides (QRGs)
Deliver the Training Course
There are 2 phases in this stage: a piloting phase is used for larger scale training programmes, which can where relevant incorporate train-the-trainer (TTT) sessions to prepare client training teams for wider training delivery; for smaller training programmes we go directly to training delivery.
Evaluate the Training Programme
We bring together participant feedback and formalise an evaluation report of the whole training programme.
Provide On-going Support
In most cases, there will be a requirement to educate and share knowledge with others at a later date so that the training and learning can be replicated on demand in a sustainable,
simple and manageable fashion.
